The Essex County Community Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees that establishes the policies & procedures and oversees general management of ECCF and the funds entrusted in our care.
John Brooke
Brooke Private Equity Advisors
John Brooke, of Hamilton, is Managing Director of Brooke Private Equity Advisors in Boston. John’s career in investments began at the opening of Advent International, in sourcing and analytics, growth equity and leveraged buyouts, covering multiple industry sectors and specializing in Asia. His work in fund raising, fund oversight and management then helped establish the Tucker Anthony Private Equity Group (Park Street Capital) as a leading private equity fund-of-funds management serving institutions and families. John established BPEA in 2003, and its predecessor fund, the Brooke Family Limited Partnership, in 1995. He is responsible for the overall management of the firm. John is a Trustee of Middlesex School and a member of ECCF’s Investment Committee.
Chris is a Senior Vice President - Investments at Morgan Stanley in Manchester by the Sea, MA. Since graduating from the University of Southern Maine in 1986, he has been immersed in the investment world at Tucker Anthony and Prudential. A native of Montreal, Chris has adopted Essex County in many ways. A resident of Beverly, he has been active as a leader, Director, and President of the Burlington Rotary Club, he is the Chairman of the Board of Deacons at First Congregational Church of Wenham, and he is a hockey coach at Austin Prep School and has been a Special Olympics coach. Chris is also a Board member of the Danvers Rotary Club.
David was a practicing attorney at Choate, Hall & Stewart, Boston. He also served as a Trust Office at State Street Bank & Trust Co. in Boston, and as a Development Officer at Harvard Univ., Faculty of Arts & Sciences. David, a Beverly resident, has been a member of the Board of Directors, Adirondack Landowners Association, a Member of the Planned Giving Group of New England and Member of the Essex County Estate Planning Association. David presently sits on the ECCF Planned Giving Committee. David graduated from Harvard A.B., was an Officer in the U.S..Army Air Defense Command, and graduated from the Univ. of Penn. L.L.B.
For 24 years, Joe has been a key figure in defining, shaping, and building the Mullen brand. During his tenure, the agency has grown from 14 people and $7.5 million billings to an $850 million agency with over 600 people in four offices. The youngest of four, Joe is an Italian immigrant who came to America at the age of five. He grew up in Queens, New York, having to fend his own way through most of his adolescence. He started his career in advertising 31 years ago at Benton & Bowles in New York City and later moved on to Bates Advertising in NY, after a two year stint as a professional musician and subsequent completion of his college education at the Bernard Baruch College of Business, the City University of NY. He moved to Boston in 1981 when he was recruited by Hill Holliday, and joined Mullen as partner and director of client services in late 1982. Joe is a resident of Manchester. He is a member of the boards of Junior Academy of Northern New England (past chair), Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, The Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange, The Ad Club of Boston(past chair), Trustee of Brookwood School, and the Samaritans, among others.
Allan Huntley
Abacus Travel (retired)
Allan Huntley, of Middleton, Business owner and entrepreneur. Allan’s career is focused on developing and selling service businesses. He is an accomplished executive in software development and consulting services, real estate brokerage, and travel services, most recently as owner of Abacus Travel in Peabody. He has been on the board of the Arthritis Foundation of Massachusetts (Development and Planned Giving Committees), volunteers with other nonprofits, and is Trustee and Development Chair at HAWC in Salem. He has helped ECCF prepare its “Back Office” agenda.
Paula founded the Women's Fund of Essex County. She is the Vice President of the Wenham Museum, President of the Wenham Museum Council and a parent volunteer at Governor's Academy, Brooks School and Proctor Academy. Paula lives in Wenham with her husband Brian and is the mother of three wonderful children.
Patricia Foley Karl
Lawrence Family Development Charter School
Patricia is a Co-Founder of the Lawrence Family Development Charter School and the Director of Beginning Teacher Program at Lawrence Family Development Charter School. She also fundraises for the PFK Scholarship Fund for LFDCS Graduates. Patricia has significant volunteer and community affiliations, to name a few: Trustee, Charles G. Pringle Foundation, Merrimack Valley Community Foundation Trustee, Summer in Greater Lawrence, Director MI/Mary Immaculate Health Care Services, Lawrence, to name a few. Patricia is a Lawrence native, graduate of St. Mary High School and UMass Lowell BS, Elementary Education; M.Ed., Education Administration. She is married to Attorney Russell Karl and has three adult children and four grandchildren.
Patricia Meservey
Salem State College
Patricia Meservey, of Salem, is President of Salem State College. Dr. Meservey is recognized for her work in the advancement of teaching excellence, promotion of faculty scholarship and academic and administrative strategic planning. Pat holds a PhD in higher education administration from Boston College, an MS in parent-child health nursing and a BS in nursing, both from Boston University. She also served as executive director of the Center for Community Health Education, Research & Service, and the national director of the Community Partnerships in Graduate Medical and Nursing Education Initiative, both of which were funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. She is developing a new focus on community service for faculty and students throughout Salem State, including the GIS project at ECCF.
Juliet Nagle
Merrimack Montessori School (retired)
Juliet was a Director and a teacher at the Merrimack Montessori School in Haverhill. Juliet is currently volunteering at Kennedy Day School of the Franciscan Children’s Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Brighton and tutoring ESL through the Literacy Connection also in Brighton. She lives in Haverhill with husband Frederick.
Michael Prior
Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc.
Michael T. Prior is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc., a telecommunications company headquartered in Salem, Massachusetts. Michael, a Hamilton resident, joined ATN in 2003 as their Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, and has served as President and CEO since 2006. Before joining ATN, Mr. Prior was a partner with Q Advisors LLC, a Denver-based investment banking and financial advisory firm focused on the telecommunications sector. From 1999 to 2002, he headed corporate development for LighTrade, Inc., a telecommunications infrastructure provider. From 1998 to 1999, Michael was a member of ComSpace Development LLC, a seed investment concern in the communications industry and an early investor in LighTrade. From 1992 to 1998, Michael practiced corporate law with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in London and New York and Perkins Coie LLP in Seattle. Michael received a B.A. degree from Vassar College and a J.D. degree summa cum laude from Brooklyn Law School.
Dick Purinton. Harvard College Class of 1952; prior Trustee of Pingree School; Active Solicitor for Harvard College Fund; Chairman of Harvard 50th Class Reunion; Past Chairman of 35th and 40th reunions. Dick is actively engaged with a number of nonprofit agencies in the Greater Lawrence area. He chairs ECCF's Development Committee. Interests: Golf, Photography. He lives in Byfield.
William Rogers
Choate, Hall & Stewart (retired)
William C. Rogers P.C. was a partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart. Will’s' practice was concentrated on corporate finance and included complex public and private financing transactions, including project finance, mergers and acquisitions, and a variety of restructuring projects for the energy and telecommunications industries. He has significant experience in the areas of proprietary rights protection, technology transfer and licensing, and contracting and financing for technology products and services, including marketing and distribution arrangements. Will also has substantial experience in all phases of business planning and organization for closely and publicly-held high technology companies. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Boston Bar Association and the California Bar Association. In addition, he is a Visiting Teacher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management. Will, a resident of Ipswich, is active in his community, serving in various capacities for local civic and charitable organizations. He received an A.B. from Harvard College, served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and received his LL.B. from Columbia University School of Law. Prior to joining Choate, Hall & Stewart in 1991, Mr. Rogers was a partner at Gaston & Snow. Will serves as ECCF's chairman of thre Board of Trustees.
Paula is a Senior Vice President at U.S. Trust Bank of America. Prior to that, she was a managing director at Barclays Wealth Management. Paula has also served as a Senior Portfolio Manager in the Wealth Management Division of US Trust managing $1.2 billion for high net worth individuals, corporate executives, business owners and entrepreneurs. Paula started her career at The Boston Company in 1977. She held various positions with the company, leaving in 1988 as a Vice President. She joined State Street Bank and Trust Company in 1988. In 2003, United State Trust Company acquired the Personal Asset Management Division from State Street. Paula graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston College in 1983 with a BS in Business Administration and With Distinction from Babson College in 1990 with a Master of Business Administration. She lives in Gloucester.
Richard L. Sumberg, a resident of Andover, is Principal of The Financial Advisors Inc., a comprehensive Financial Planning and Investment Firm he founded in 1988. Dick received a BSBA from Boston College and an MBA from Suffolk University. He continues to be very active in the community including membership, and past President, of the Merrimack Valley Estate Planning Council, member Yankee Clipper Council, Boy Scouts of America, board member Family Service Inc., current member Yankee Clipper Council, Boy Scouts of America, current VP, past President of Board, Family Service, Inc, past Finance Chair and Member of the Board of Trustees, Malden Catholic High School, current volunteer, volunteer coordinator and fundraiser, 30B Melrose St. Habitat House Project.
Chuck vonBruns, a resident of Salem, is an investment representative and financial planner who worked for Bancnorth Investment Group. An early participant in ECCF, he has brought financial expertise from his 12 years as the Controller at Schafer Corp., a high tech consulting firm working primarily with the Defense Dept. on cutting edge laser and optical technologies. Prior to his employment with Schafer he worked as a CPA in the Private Business Group at Peat, Marwick Mitchell. He is a native of Vermont who holds a B. A. in Philosophy from Marlboro College and a M. S. in Accounting from Northeastern University. Chuck serves as ECCF Corporate Treasurer and chairs the Audit Committee.
