The Betty Beland Greater Lawrence Summer Fund—which supports summer recreation, learning and hope for at-risk youth in the Greater Lawrence area—has awarded 49 agencies nearly $280,000 worth of total grants. Now, almost 15,000 children are getting ready for a whole lot of summer fun. Congratulations to each organization.

Press Release:
Danvers, MA—As they play soccer, perform in theater, ride horses and conduct science experiments, almost 15,000 youth-at-risk in the Greater Lawrence area are already enjoying a better summer.

Thanks to the Betty Beland Greater Lawrence Summer Fund, managed by the Essex County Community Foundation, 49 nonprofit organizations have been awarded $279,500 worth of total grants. The Betty Beland GLSF supports summer recreation, learning enrichment and increased opportunities for at-risk youth in the Greater Lawrence region.

“Betty Beland was passionate about Lawrence,” said Julie Bishop, vice president of grants and services at the Essex County Community Foundation. “From sailing to high school prep to just getting a nutritious meal, this collaborative fund serves Lawrence youth in ways that honor her legacy and generosity.”

For instance, one fund recipient, Windrush Farm Therapeutic Equitation, credits the Beland Fund to making possible its “Giddyup and Grow” summer program. “The combination of hands-on learning about the horses and reading about horses makes the kids much more eager learners,” says Jenna Nowosacki of Windrush. “Parents have said that because of this program, they’ve seen their child sit down to read by choice for the first time ever.”

The GLSF began in 1990 by Betty Beland, former administrator of The Stevens Foundations. After she passed away in the fall of 2011, the fund was renamed in her honor as the Betty Beland Greater Lawrence Summer Fund. Since 2001, the Greater Lawrence Summer Fund has contributed more than $3.5 million to summer programs in the Greater Lawrence area.
